The service sector accounts for 63% of the countrys GDP (last data 2013), followed by agriculture and international tourism. In February 2019, Stats NZ released its fruchtwein recent unemployment statistics. About only about 120,000 (or 4.3%) people in New Zealand are unemployed.By the end of 2018, the average wage reached 29.66 dollars per hour.Does New Zealand need more foreign workers?New Zealand has long been perceived as a country friendly to foreigners. However, if AsiaOne.com has anything to say about it, the reality is a bit different visa statistics reveal that the current government is beginning to fulfill its election promise of reducing the number of new long-term migrants.Since 2016, the number of approved residency applications has been decreasing from more than 4,100 to less than 3,000.To be fair, the number of submitted applications has been dwindling too. In the end, the combination of these two factors resulted in shortage of skilled workers. However, when you take a step back and look at the past decade, the number of work visas issued has increased, from 175,714 approved applications in the year to June 2009 to 230,258 in the June 2018 year.In the case of the residencies approved in 2018 and 2019, most applicants came from India and China, followed by the Philippines, South Africa, and Britain.Until 2017, when New Zealand made changes to their point-based immigration system, most of the applicants for residency were low-skilled and lower-income workers. Then the country introduced multiple small regulatory tweaks to attract more skilled workers. These included measures such as new minimum income thresholds, stricter mon ey laundering compliance, and others. What professions are in demand in New Zealand? The population of New Zealand only amounts to a bit less than five million (4,885,300 is 2017 estimate). Because of that, finding a job in this comparatively small job market (compared e.g. to the USA) might come as a challenge. You can improve your chances, if you have expertise in one of the fields in which New Zealand experiences a shortage of skills. Wondering what kind of skills are those?Head over to New Zealands Skill shortage list checker. Its a simple online tool that will help you find out if your occupation is currently in demand there. The long term skill shortage list will show you the occupations that have been in need of skilled workers for a longer time. These include professions like Construction Project Manager, Electrical Engineering Technician as well as Multimedia Specialist (Film Animator) or Food Technologist. The immediate skills shortage list includes those occupations for which skilled workers are required immediately. These are also the positions in which New Zealanders have no interest (for a variety of reasons). What are the most in-demand professions then? Make sure to apply if you have experience in Agriculture and Forestry (Arborist, Apiarist, Beef Cattle Farmer, etc.), Engineering (Mechanical Engineering Technician, Civil Engineering Draughtsperson, etc.), Trades (Baker, Bricklayer, Carpenter, etc.), and many others. What about New Zealands immigration policy? As you probably suspect, making up your mind about something is still a far cry from taking action. Where do you begin then?By applying for a working visa, of course. That is, unless youre an Australian resident or citizen. If thats the case, youre free to work and study in New Zealand using just your passport.Still, if you belong to the other 7.25 billion people on the planet, youll have to apply for a working visa. The country provides several types of permits and working visas. New Zealands immi gration office website will help you pick the right one. Are you coming to NZ to work? Start a business? Study? This website is surprisingly straightforward and will help you find the right kind of visa for you.Are you going to get swamped in paperwork? If youre a 30 years old professional from the US and you havent received a job offer yet, you can choose from eight different types of visas. Lets have a look at the three most common.Skilled Migrant Resident Visas arefor talented individuals who are less than 55 years old and have skills and expertise that could benefit New Zealands economy. This type of visa also enables you to stay in the country indefinitely, with the option to apply for a permanent residency together with your partner and dependent children. You can also apply for a Specific Purpose Work Visain a case you have skills and expertise necessary for a specific job or event. That includes such examples as business people on secondments, sports players, professional coac hes, specialist installers, and so on.The most significant difference to the first type of visa is that you must be coming to the country for a specific purpose and for a particular period of time. And last but notlage least, theres Silver Fern Job Search Work Visa. This permit is aimed at highly skilled young people looking for long-term employment before they can apply for residency through the first type of visa we mentioned. Apart from having a recognized qualification or two years of work experience, you must have at least $4,200in your bank account. With this permit, youre allowed to stay for 9 months. For more information on every kind of visa you might need, head over here. What is the expression of interest? For some types of visas, the first step to be even considered is to have completed the so-called Expression of Interest form (EOI).Its your way of saying how much youd love to work in the country and to what extent you think you meet the necessary criteria.Even though it mi ght seem like a formality, careful preparation is necessary. But if you have all the information at hand and understand the skilled migrant policy, youll be done in less than two hours. Most people are not able to complete it in one sitting, though.A friendly note before you even start check out the so-called Points Indicator. Train Your Brain to Cope with Stress in a Job Search

Train Yur Brain to Cope with Stress in a Job SearchTrain Your Brain to Cope with Stress in a Job SearchImagine this Youre standing alone in the spotlight on a stage with dozens, evenhundreds, of people watching you.Theyre there to be amused and youre there to entertain them. Its your job to makescores of perfect strangers laugh.Your heart beats a little faster than normal andsweat pours down your brow. Youre stressed. Very stressed.Butthats OK. Really.Whether its standup comedy orsearching for a job, even thoughit seems counterintuitive, experts agree thatthe right amount of stress can actually be a great tool for lightening the burden.Training your brain to better cope with stress during the job hunt can be as simple as shifting your perception of stress and how it affects you. Here are three ways to train yourbrain to cope with stress during a job search1. Change your understanding of stress.Often viewed as one of lifes greatest angsts, stress can actually be used as an advantage in certain situations. Ian Robertson, author of The Stress Test How Pressure Can Make You Stronger and Sharper, explains that a moderate amount of stress is actually beneficialto the brain. When youre stressed, your bodysecretes the chemical noradrenaline. When there is just the right amount- not too much, and not too little but just that perfect amount of noradrenaline that the brain releases- we experience what Robertson calls the Goldilocks Zone. When we experience this state, different parts of the brain are able to better communicate with one another and generate new neural connections. As this chemical is produced, people experience less depression and anxietyand increased brain functions. For reasons that need not be explained, the aforementioned benefits of noradrenaline are reasonenough tonot freak out at the first sign of stress. With the new understanding that a small amount of stress is good for you, youcan better flossele the inevitable highs and lows of searching for a job. 2. Fake it till you make it.A racing heart and dry mouth are not onlysymptoms of stress and fear but excitement as well. In this Quartz article on brain tuning, Robertson suggests that if youcan trick your brain into thinking youare actually excited or anticipating a good challenge, then those symptoms of stress can actually work in your favor.Multiple studies have shown that when people are put in stressful situations, such as answering math questions on the spot or singing karaoke in front of strangers, trying to excitethemselves, as opposed to trying to stay relaxed, can cause them toactually perform better. In the case of searching for a job, you can apply the same techniques. Rather than worry yourself over how time-consuming, challenging, and stressful the task at hand may be, take a different approach and accept the challenge with excitement and anticipation.3. Use it or lose it.Robertson suggests embracing stress rather than avoiding it. Similar to the immune system, if you d ont use your stress response system it will eventually weakenand you will not perform as welland will increaseyour levelof stress. Throughout his research, Robertson has realized that many performers and comedians actually start to get more nervous if they dont feel that anxiety coming on prior to a performance. They have become so accustomed to good stress that in its absence they know that their game is off and their performance will not be up to par.So perhaps that nervous pit you get in your stomach prior to sending submit on that application or while in the waiting room for your next interview is actually a good thing. It could mean youreembracing the challenging situations that life throws at you. Next time you set out to find a new job, consider these points on training your brain.Readers, how has stress affected your job search? Do you have any tips for our members to cope with stress? Taking Time to Rewrite That Resume

Taking Time to Rewrite That ResumeTaking Time to Rewrite That ResumeDont let the challenges of a resume rewrite overwhelm you. Take a look at your skills and successful resumes to get your head in the game. She never had to look for work.As a Truman scholar and a top-notch statistics, marine biology and water-quality expert with two masters degrees and a Ph.D., work looked for this seasoned professional. Until recently, that is, when the bottom fell out of the economy. After a recent layoff, the overwhelming prospect of redoing her resume is paralyzing the mid-career scientist. Because were hearing plenty of stories like hers, we turned to time-management and resume experts for help on how to prepare for a major resume update, even if youre going to have a professional do the writing for you. Read on for their tips.Professional, Google thyselfHenry Motyka likewise found himself overwhelmed when he found himself back in job-search mode after a long career as a business analyst and proje ct manager. At first, he said, he was overwhelmed and failed miserably.Motyka gleaned one crucial tip to shorten the process A career coach told him to conduct an Internet search on his title to find sample resumes. He searched the terms Business Analyst Resumes and Project Manager Resumes.Look for the strongest resumes that your search returns for a blueprint of how peers fruchtwein effectively present their skills and accomplishments.Talk first, draft laterCheryl Heisler, president of the lawyer career consultancy Lawternatives, said the best advice she offers resume writers is to talk first and draft after. There is virtually no way to know what a new industry needs to know about you until you have a sufficient understanding of what employers in that industry are looking for, she said.Heisler said that while sampling industry-specific resumes is a good way to get started, the next step should be getting out and networking with people connected to your target market.Heisler advised asking such people what skills and talents they look for in a new hire. Next, build evidence of those skills into your resume, even if you developed those skills in a completely out-of-the-norm industry, she said. Many abilities transfer really well from one industry to the next, Heisler told Ladders. For example, I work with lots of lawyers who want to re-career. The technical legal skills they have honed (i.e. writing briefs, drafting contracts) probably wont sell well in alternative careers. But break those technical skills down into their transferable components and you have demonstrated abilities to research, write, analyze, persuade, negotiate and get to a resolution. Those skills are marketable to most anyone.List accomplishments, dump responsibilitiesAnother way Motyka shortened his resume redo time is by only listing accomplishments and leaving off responsibilities. No one wants to see those anyway, he said.Get professional helpThe biggest thing is to get help, Motyka said. Why waste time? If you arent sure of what you are doing, get someone who knows to help you.An overwhelmed mid-career manufacturing/engineering professional did just that, turning for help to Lynda Zugec, managing director of The Workforce Consultants. He was so anxious about writing his resume, he had pretty much just given up, Zugec said.Try to replicate the coaching experience by asking yourself some of the questions Zugec asked her clientWhat tasks did you engage in at your prior work? What time periods did you take to complete the projects? What skills did you need at the time? The conversation only took about an hour, Zugec said. Her client felt so anxious about the task simply because hed exaggerated his perception of the information required. Everyone knows what they have done and the skills they used to get there, she said. Its just a matter of organizing it, and talking through it helps.Break the work into little chunksLife/business coach Julie Melillo said that its helpful t o break the resume-redo task into numerous smaller steps. Her approachSit down at your computer.Look through your files and locate your old resume.Print out your old resume.Google resume makeover and make a list of helpful Web sites.Look for obvious resume errors.Begin to make changes to your resume.Show your resume to trusted people for feedback.Keep asking ?What is the next step? and write down that step, she said. You wont start out with a perfect resume. Youll start out with a lot of questions and confusion - and thats OK. Endure through the process of listing out your action steps and you will finish with a completed, stellar resume.

How to Reduce Resistance to Change From Employees

How to Reduce Resistance to Change From EmployeesHow to Reduce Resistance to Change From EmployeesResistance to change is a natural reaction when employees are asked, well, to change. Change is uncomfortable and requires new ways of thinking and doing. People have trouble developing a vision of what life will look like on the other side of a change. So, they tend to cling to the known rather than embrace the unknown. Employees dont fear change, though, they fear the unknown. They fear being changed. Change Produces Anxiety and Uncertainty in Employees Employees may lose their sense of security. They may prefer the status quo. The range of reactions, when change is introduced, is unpredictable. No employee is left unaffected by fruchtwein changes. As a result, resistance to change often occurs when change is introduced. Your Expectations Play a Role in Employee Resistance Resistance to change is best viewed as a normal reaction. Even the most cooperative, supportive employees may experience resistance. So, dont introduce change believing that you will experience nothing but resistance or that resistance will be severe. Instead, introduce change with a positive spirit and believe that your employees want to cooperate, make the best of each work situation and that they will completely and enthusiastically support the changes as time goes by. By your thinking and your approach, you can affect the degree to which resistance bogs the change down. You can reduce natural resistance by the actions you take and how you involve the employees. Deep in their hearts, they want to become part of the bigger picture of the organization. Communication and Input Reduce Employee Resistance In a best-case scenario, every employee has the opportunity to talk about, provide input to, and have an impact on the changes you are pursuing. Rationally, this depends on how big the change is and how many people the change will affect. In a company-wide change effort, for example, the employee input will most likely affect how to implement the changes at a departmental level, not the issue of whether to make the changes in the first place. The overall direction, in these cases, comes from senior leadership who have solicited feedback from their reporting staff. In some cases, a leadership team to lead the changes organizationally is established. These teams may contain a cross-section of employees from across the organization. Or, they are often staffed by managers and senior leaders who have consequential oversight for portions of the organization. If communication is a strength in your organization, the opportunity for input may have reached down to the frontline soldiers. But, this is often not the case, because the input and feedback have to make their way back through all of the filters presented by middle management. These recommendations are made for the millions of managers, supervisors, team leaders, and employees who are asked to change something- or everything- periodically at work. You may or may not have had input into the direction chosen by your senior leaders or your organization. But, as the core doers at work, you are expected to make the changes and deal with any resistance to change that you may experience along the way. You can reduce employee resistance to change by taking these recommended actions at each stage. Manage Resistance to Change These tips will help you minimize, reduce, and make less painful, the resistance that you create as you introduce changes. This is not the definitive guide to managing resistance to change- but implementing these suggestions will give you a head start. Own the Changes No matter where the change originated- and change can show up at any point in your organization, even originating with you- you must own the change yourself. Its your responsibility to implement the change. You can only do that effectively if you plan how you will implement the change with the people you influ ence or oversee in your organization. Get Over It Okay, youve had the opportunity to tell senior managers what you think. You spoke loudly in the focus group. You presented your recommended direction, with data and examples, to the team. The powers that be have chosen a different direction than the one you supported. Its time to move on. Once the decision is made, your agitating time is over. Whether you agree or not, once the organization, the group, or the team decides to move on- you need to do everything in your power to make the selected direction succeed. Anything else is sabotage, and it will make your life miserable. It can even get you fired. No Biased and Fractional Support Allowed Even if you dont support the direction, once it is decided, you owe it 100 percent of your leadership and support. Wishy-washy or partial support is undermining the effort- it wont earn you any points from your managers or senior leaders or cause your coworkers and reporting staff to respect you . If you cant buy into the fact that the chosen direction is where you are going, you can, at least, buy into the fact that it is critical that you support it. Once the direction is chosen, it is your job to make it work. Anything less is disrespectful, undermining, and destructive of the senior leaders direction. Support the change or its time for you to move on and out. (Dont wait for your senior leaders to terminate your employment for non-support. You can do a lot of damage while waiting for the end to come.) Recognize that Resistance Is Minimized if You Have Created a Trusting, Employee-Oriented, Supportive Work Environment If your employees think that you are honest, trust you and feel loyal to you, they are much more likely to get on board with the changes quickly. So, the efforts that you have expended in building this type of relationship will serve you well during the change implementation. (They will serve you well in general, but especially during times of stress and cha nge.) Communicate the Change You undoubtedly have reporting staff, departmental colleagues, and employees to whom you must communicate the change. How you communicate the change to the people you influence has the single most important impact on how much resistance to change will occur. One of the key factors is an environment in which there is awidespread belief that a change is needed. So, one of your first tasks in effective communication is to build the case for why the change was needed. Specifically, inform the employees about what your group can and cannot affect. Spend time discussing how to implement the change and make it work. Answer questions share your earlier reservations, but state that you are on board and going to make the change work now. Ask the employees to join you in that endeavor because only the team can make the change happen. Stress that you have knowledge, skills, and strengths that will help move the team forward, and so does each of the team members. All are critical to making the changes work- and gee, life after the changes may get better. Help the Employees Identify Whats in it For Them to Make the Change A good portion of resistance disappears when employees are clear about the benefits the change brings to them. Benefits to the group, the department, and the organization should be stressed, too. But, nothing is more important to an individual employee than to know the positive impact on their own career or job. Additionally, employees must feel that the time, energy, commitment, and focus necessary to implement the change are compensated equally by the benefits they will attain from making the change. Happier customers, increased sales, a pay raise, recognition from the boss, and an exciting new role or project are examples of ways in which you can help employees feel compensated for the time and energy that any change requires. Listen Empathetically to the Employees You can expect that the employees will experience the same r ange of emotions that you experienced when the change was introduced to you. Never minimize an employees response to even the most simple change. You cant know or experience the impact from an individual employees point of view. Maybe the change seems insignificant to many employees, but the change will seriously impact another employees favorite task. Hearing the employees out and letting them express their point of view in a non-judgmental environment will reduce resistance to change. Empower Employees to Contribute Control of their own jobs is one of the five key factors in what employees want from work. This control aspect follows when you seek to minimize resistance to change. Give the employees control over any aspect of the change that they can manage. If you have communicated erkennbarly, you have provided the direction, the rationale, the goals, and the parameters that have been set by your organization. Within that framework, your job is to empower the employees to make th e change work. Practice effective delegation and set the critical path points at which you need feedback for the change effort- and get out of their way. Create an Organization-Wide Feedback and Improvement Loop Do these steps mean that the change that was made is the right or optimal change? Not necessarily. You must maintain an open line of communication throughout your organization to make sure that feedback reaches the ears of the employees leading the charge. Changing details, continuous improvement, and tweaking is a naturaland expected part of any organizational change. Most changes are not poured in concrete, but there must be a willingness to examine the improvement (plan, do, study, take additional action). If you implement your change in an organizational environment that is employee-oriented, with transparent communication and a high level of trust, you have a huge advantage. But, even in the most supportive environment, you must understand and respond to the range of hu man emotions and responses that are elicited during times of intense change.

Plan your Career in 5 Steps

Plan your Career in 5 Steps There once was a time when a career path was basically spread out in front of every worker from the day he/she started working. This path was largely out of the persons control and didnt have a lot to do with what the worker wanted out of his/her career, but more to do with what the company wanted out of the individuals career. Now more than ever, people are given responsibility and control over their careers. While this is fantastic in that it opens a world of advancement and opportunity to employees, it can also be a little overwhelming in that people now have to rely much more on themselves to succeed. If you are attempting to build your career, whether one that you have just started, or one that you have been in for several years, these career management tips can help you to continue on the path to success1. Always Keep LearningNo one, not even the absolute upper cr ust of a company hierarchy, knows everything there is to know about business or a particular industry. There is always room to continue learning and growing. Continued education means building your skills and deepening your understanding of the field so that you can progress toward higher levels.Perhaps you can take a professional development class, receive a certification or even go back to school by taking night, weekend and/or online courses. Any one (or combination) of these are sure to help you learn new information that can be applied to your career field.2. Be Open to IdeasYou are going to learn a lot even if you arent in a formal training session. By opening yourself to what your boss, superiors, coworkers and even customers have to say, you can obtain tremendous insight into the way that your position is evolving and what you can do to ensure that you are moving in the right direction.Pay attention during staff and/or company meetings and listen to everyones ideas. Adhere t o any feedback from your manager (especially around evaluation times) or even directly approach your manager and ask him/her how you can improve in your role. People who disregard constructive criticism and believe they know it all only harm themselves in the long run. The people you work with may have a wealth of helpful information and ideas that could positively affect how you perform on the job, but you must be willing to have an open mind and receive the help.3. Start Where you AreYou may have your eyes on the prize, but if you dont pay attention to where you are right now, you are never going to get to the next place along your path. By fulfilling the tasks and responsibilities of your current career to the absolute best of your abilities, you are setting yourself up for a better career. Dont be afraid to ask for suggestions about how you can do more and do better in your current positionmake yourself valuable and they will be willing to work with you as you progress.4. Build your NetworkWe all know the power of employee referrals. Building your personal and professional network is a powerful and effective way to find and obtain a new, desirable position. First look to your immediate family and friends and then extend your search to professional connections. Word of mouth is great, but dont forget to utilize those on your social networks for possible help.5. Identify the Next Point on your TimelineThink of your career as a timeline. If someone were to map it out, what would you want mentioned along the way? Figure out what that next point should be, and clearly define it. It is next to impossible to reach a goal that you havent really made, and it is almost impossible to make a goal about something that you dont know you want. By clearly identifying and defining the job that you want after your current one, you will be better able to fulfill the steps it will take to achieve that goal.

Top 6 Best Free Job Search Apps

Top 6 Best Free Job Search AppsTop 6 Best Free Job Search AppsYoure busy, your life is hectic, you dont have a lot of time for job searching, and you dont want to be stuck to your laptop or use your work computer to job hunt. You dont need to. Just like alfruchtwein everything else in your life, job searching has gone mobile and you can do it on the go. There isnt much you cant do with one of the apps that connects job seekers with available positions. Most of the application process can be done with your phone or tablet, though it can be a bit cumbersome at times. Even so, you can search and apply for jobs without using a computer. Taking it a step further, some of the apps will enable you to create a resume, match you with open jobs, and apply directly from the app, saving you search time. Which apps should job seekers use to give their job search a boost? There are many apps to choose from for both iOS and Android devices, so I asked someone who knows all about apps for his recomm endations. Yarden Tadmor, the founder and CEO of Switch, shares information on free mobile job apps for job seekers, along with tips for how to use them. 6 Free Mobile Apps to Boost Your Job Search 1. Indeed Job Search Indeed is the best app of the massive desktop job boards. Indeed allows you to upload your resume and apply rather easily. This app can feel too much like a mobile extension of the desktop platform. It is search-based, making it harder to passively distitelbild new positions. The app also requires you to fill in some job-specific information in order to apply to some positions, including items like cover letters, portfolios and samples. That can be an anxious process when youre doing all that from a handheld device. Get the App Download on iOS Download on Android 2. CareerBuilder CareerBuilders app provides job seekers with tools for every step of a job search and beyond. Users can create and save a personalized resume with a few clicks. You can then use your res ume to apply for jobs of interest. There are alerts that proactively inform you when your resume has been viewed and who is viewing it. Job searching is simple and easy with the artificial intelligence and augmented reality powered app. Humair Ghauri, CareerBuilders Chief Product Officer, says, We can tell you which jobs are in your immediate vicinity or any designated distance and provide an augmented reality view of job openings and what they pay - as you walk by businesses. Our local targeting provides a map view and list view of jobs and serves up an entirely different experience for job seekers. In addition, the app sends notifications on new job openings based on the job seekers preferences and show higher paying jobs with information on acquiring the skills needed to get to the next level. Users can use the tools to start planning for the next stage of their career. Get the App Download on iOS 3. Glassdoor Very similar to its much-heralded desktop experience, Glassdoor all ows mobile users to both access thousands of up-to-date job listings while getting first-hand knowledge of companies from current and former employees. The app is segmented into different categories jobs, companies, salaries and interviews and can feel a little overwhelming to navigate. Much like the Glassdoor desktop experience, the company reviews and employee insights are the attraction here. Filling out full applications via your mobile device? Not so much.Get the App Download on iOS Download on Android 4. SnagAJob The premiere mobile job app for hourly employees, SnagAJob understands that the non-salary workforce needs to move fast. After importing your social profile from Facebook or Google and filling in personal details, browse hourly positions in your area and click to apply. Filter positions by Schedule (part-time, seasonal, summer jobs) and font of Job (automotive, construction, food restaurant) and Distance. The app also features a handy map function to show you the companys location. Drawbacks? While SnagAJob has many jobs that need just a single click to apply, some require a longer application process, and the lack of skilled, salaried positions can feel limiting.Get the App Download on iOS Download on Android 5. Good.Co The job search is as much about self-discovery as it is job discovery, and Good.Co is a useful reminder of that fact. The app users find companies and careers that will benefit their overall well being, not just their bank account. Through personality quizzes like What Are Your Unique Strengths? and How Do You Come Across to Others?, Good.Co unlocks increasingly nuanced insights about yourself and offers you companies and jobs that might match your personality and working style. You cannot apply to these jobs within the app, but instead are redirected back to major job boards for that part of the process. Get the App Download on iOS Download on Android 6. Simply Hired Another job aggregator, Simply Hired has a continuous ly improving mobile app interface. Recently, they added features that allow job seekers to sort their job searches by date and relevance, in an attempt to relieve the crushing weight of endless job scrolling. Your homepage includes your recent searches and it is easy to save and share jobs. Like other search apps, though, Simply Hired seems to have one foot in mobile and the other on desktop. For example, some jobs allow one-touch mobile applications, while others require you to upload a resume and even a cover letter. The app is still search-based, requiring candidates to find relevant jobs rather than have them delivered, and the user experience can feel like the web platform shrunken down to a smartphone screen. Get the App Download on iOS Tips for Using Job Search Apps How can you get the most out of the apps youre using to streamline your job search? These tips will help you search and apply for jobs and connect with hiring managers, with just a few taps on your phone or t ablet. Distill your resume to fit on a smartphone screen. Forget your traditional one-page CV. Mobile job apps require an even more succinct display of your skills and experience. If formulated correctly, less can be more. Be certain to prioritize your most marketable credentials to capture the hiring managers attention. Forcing yourself to distill your background in this way will help you have a better understanding of your professional self and eventually help you better market yourself in networking and interview situations. Know the keywords. The best job apps use smart algorithms to match relevant candidates with open jobs and vice-versa. These algorithms rely on keywords that illustrate certain experiences and skills, those that candidates may possess and job listings may include as requirements for a position. If youre a salesperson with expertise in channel sales, for example, ensure youve listed that under your skills. Clarity is vital. Save the nuance for after you connect with a hiring manager. Polish your profile. A great photo, a compelling headline, and a clear outline of skills and experience can help separate you from the crowd and inject some much-needed personality into your professional profile. Stand out, but try to limit confusing or cute language and images. Make the first move. Many job apps match candidates and employers in a one-on-one chat once theyve shown mutual interest. At this stage, its important you be assertive and initiate the conversation. Theres no point in being passive here. Especially if its an attractive posting, hiring managers receive many applicants and an aggressive approach can set you apart from the pack. Why not use this first impression to paint yourself as a go-getter with the skills to boot? Be attentive. Job search often rewards the timely and attentive, and this is especially true with job apps. Being more streamlined than traditional job boards and company websites, job apps require more consistent engageme nt and typically move rapidly. Keep track of your matches with employers and messages with hiring managers or recruiters. For apps with in-app chat, your response time should be quick. Hiring managers appreciate this kind of aggressive punctuality. Be professional. Even if youre using a job app on your phone, you still must abide by the rules of professionalism when corresponding with employers. Sure, the dialogue and environment feel refreshingly casual and stress-free, but you must remain vigilant about accuracy, proper grammar, attention to detail, and professional etiquette. You might be tapping to apply to jobs and texting with hiring managers, but always remember that this isnt social media - our professional future is at stake More Apps for Job Seekers In addition to the apps that will help with your job search, there are apps you can use to directly find quick gigs and professional money-making opportunities.

What is the best way to get a promotion

What is the best way to get a promotion What is the best way to get a promotion What is the best way to get promoted? At the start of my career I was under the impression that working hard and doing great work would get me promotions. Over time, I was met with the harsh reality that hard work alone does not progress you forward in your career and that there are TWO other elements you have to focus on.The light-bulb moment for me is when I learned that to ascend the corporate ladder it boiled down to PIE - a concept introduced by Harvey Coleman in his book, “Empowering Yourself: The Organizational Game Revealed.” Coleman became discouraged when he hit a glass ceiling in his career while others continued to surpass him with promotions. As an African American man in the corporate world, he suspected racial bias was at play. Yet, after extensive research, he came to realize that there is more to career success than being a top performer, and that a person also needs to bolster their image and exposure.PIE stands for 3 factors to determine career success:Performa nce: Definition: How well you do your job Attributes to Career Success: 10% Image Definition: How you are perceived by people who work with you Attributes to Career Success: 30% Exposure Definition: People know what you’ve done and how it matters to the organization Attributes to Career Success: 60% These numbers were astounding to me. Performance at 10% feels way too low, and Exposure at 60% makes me feel exhausted just thinking about it. But then it started to make sense when I thought of my career in terms of a product.A product could have top notch technology and features, the Performance, but if the Image is wrong, such as the packaging doesn’t convey its value or stand out on the shelf, few people are likely to buy it. Additionally, if the Exposure is minimal, such as there’s no marketing, and essentially no one knows this incredible product exists, then it will fail. The greatest product, or career, can never reach its full potential if it doesn’t have the the right Image and Exposure.Upon changing my mentality around promotions, I came up with three practical ways to improve Image and Exposure at work.1. Change the way you talk about yourselfSelf branding is ridiculous these days- I am not recommending that you start self-labeling to cringe-worthy levels that we ha ve become accustomed to on LinkedIn:Instead, you should start characterizing yourself in the way you want to be known. Such as let’s say you want speaking opportunities at events but no one has ever asked you. Write a post on LinkedIn that says,“For your future events on digital education, I am available to speak on the following topics … ”Then list some topics that may spur some interest. No one deemed you worthy to speak - you did. And by you declaring you should be speaking on those topics, that’s the first step to it happening.Additionally, here’s a more in-depth example of an Office Manager who rebrands herself to ultimately be promoted to the Head of Corporate Events.2. Tell people what you want.I have a friend who was upset because she wasn’t nominated for the emerging leaders program at her company, so I encouraged her to tell her boss she wanted to join. When she did, her boss was thrilled that she was interested in joining the program and immediately got her into the program. It wasn’t that her boss didn’t think she was an emerging leader, he just didn’t realize that was something she wanted. It’s incredible how many of life’s opportunities are given to people who ask for them. While we would all prefer that our bosses and colleagues would ensure we are afforded all the opportunities we deserve, people are usually too oblivious to realize they should help you.So help them help you, spell it out for them. Tell them you want the promotion, you are interested in a specific project, you want to lead the next meeting, you want to go on stage during the magic show - whatever it is, make sure you tell others and they will very likely help you get there.3. Debrief your major projects. You just finished a big project, and instead of charging ahead into the next one, set aside time to do a retrospective with your boss. It’s not fun, in my opinion, to comb through a finished project to get all the data - but I promise that once you do, it is so gratifying to be able to articulate the journey you took and how you moved the needle. In the debrief, emphasize the pain and problems presented at the beginning of the project - we often forget how bad things were. Then, take your boss through all the steps, the results, and key learnings. Don’t forget to toot your horn a bit:“We made it by the deadline and under budget. I led the Peterson account which ended up securing us our biggest sponsor. Here is the feedback from that sponsor…They want to work with us on the next one.”Every time I do this, it’s such a great moment of thoughtfulness, reflection, and celebration. Bosses feel proud when their team accomplishes great things, so make sure to provide them with that moment to understand how things went and praise you for it.An example from my own career is that, on several occasions, I’ve heard my boss say that he is exasperated by the number of requests for money he receives to spend on different initiatives. I realized I was doing things on a monthly basis that were saving us money as a company, and it occurred to me that he would like to hear some actual good news instead of requests. So I showed him how much money we spent per hire to recruit our team last year, and compared it to how much we spent this year, which revealed that the cost dramatically decreased and the quality of talent stayed steady. He didn’t ask for that information, and there is no one else on the team that would have pointed that out for me. Therefore it was my job to give my performance the exposure it deserved.Make sure to find organizations where you can grow as a professional and then think about PIE as you set your sights on that next promotion. Performance isn’t everything, because if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, is it actually going to be considered for the regional supervisor position? Image and Exposure are essential to make it happen. For more rapid-fire, battle-tested care er tips and tricks, check out Self Made Millennial YouTube Channel. This article first appeared on Quora.

No More Excuses for Lack of Boardroom Diversity

No More Excuses for Lack of Boardroom Diversity No More Excuses for Lack of Boardroom Diversity There just arent that many women qualified to sit in the boardroom. Thats the most common excuse given by executives when asked about  the gender disparity in the C-suite and the boardroom. That may have been true at one point, but in 2017 that excuse no longer holds water. The truth is an  expansive pool of qualified women ready to step into top corporate roles exists, according to research from global recruitment firm Harvey Nash and the HKU Business School of the University of Hong Kong. Harvey Nash and HKU jointly run a board preparedness program called the Womens Directorship Programme (WDP), which aims to tackle the existing gender diversity imbalance in boardrooms through lectures, interactive sessions, and leadership exercises that help women meet the challenges of climbing the corporate ladder. The program offers answers to the worldwide business communitys call to tackle the existing gender imbalance in boardrooms, says Kirti Lad, director of executive search at Harvey Nash APAC. It has helped to produce a pool of board-ready female leaders ready to step up and create change in the business community and empowered the next generation of women leaders to gain the confidence and skills needed to secure a board position. 5  Steps to Help Female Executives Prepare for the C-Suite There are a number of steps women can take to prepare for a seat at the executive  table. Based on the feedback from business leaders in the WDP, Lad identifies five key areas for women to focus on to ensure they are prepared for top positions: coaching, mentoring, sponsorship, networking, and training. Here, Lad explains the importance of each: Coaching can be used to develop a particular skill set or to support career development. It serves to develop and cultivate self-awareness to enhance leadership. Coaching is often focused on behaviors and managing change. Mentoring can be completed formally through an internal program or informally through personal networks. There is also huge value in acting as a mentor for others in order to share knowledge and develop future leaders. Sponsorship cannot be developed; it is a relationship that has to be earned. This is all about the value of the relationships a person makes. In order to be sponsored, women have to be known. Sponsors are the gateways to new opportunities. Research from the Centre for Work-Life Policy  found that a sponsor can [make professionals more likely to negotiate raises and ask for stretch assignments]. Networking is essential to any top executive in order to build and exert influence. In addition to internal networking, women need to be sure to look beyond and develop contacts with people from outside their industry or field. Training  and  continuous learning and development are key to any executive career. Investment in honing and developing new and pre-existing skills is essential. Both internal and external training are beneficial. How Companies Can Improve Executive Diversity Companies seeking balanced and diverse C-suites must consciously implement strategies from the top down in order to achieve the goal. Lad recommends that companies  take the following actions: Promoting family-friendly work environments:  Offer flexible work, change overtime rules to discourage long working hours, and encourage men to take paternity leave. Mapping and identifying high-potential women: [Do so] both within the business and externally to support a strong female talent pipeline. Changing the business culture:  Welcome women to after-work drinks and other social activities. Make sure returning mothers feel welcome and supported in their roles. Establish and enforce positive behaviors toward women in the workplace. Engaging more male and female champions of change:  Support men and women who recognize diversity as an issue. Encourage them to act as sponsors and mentors for women within the business. Changing the hiring model:  Create talent management systems that focus on performance instead of purely measuring experience in years. Changing the interview process and selection model:  Ensure interview panels consist of at least one senior woman. Hold unconscious bias training to ensure teams are aware of their decision-making processes. Creating internal mentoring programs:  Use existing company role models to promote diversity initiatives and support talent development. Managing unconscious bias that exists during the hiring and promotion processes:  A top-down approach, tailored training, diverse hiring process, and fair talent management process are some of the methods that can be used to eliminate unconscious bias and promote a more inclusive corporate culture. “These steps can have a real impact, Lad says. Companies like IBM, GE, Pepsi, Goldman Sachs, [and others] have all invested in diversity programs and seen real results in the numbers of women that are moving through their companies into senior roles. Companies that make the effort to diversify their executive leadership will reap benefits in the form of new ideas and approaches to problems. Boards made up of members from the same small network can often lead to groupthink, where those in the group come from the same background, share the same viewpoint, and are happy with the status quo, Lad says. A certain level of tension or conflict in a boardroom helps to encourage varied approaches and often leads to boards being more agile and aware of customer issues. If thats not convincing enough, Lad provides a few statistics that might change your mind. According to figures from Credit Suisse, the share prices of companies with market capital greater than $10 billion that had female directors outperformed those without by 26 percent across seven years, she says. For small to mid-size companies, the stocks of companies with female directors on their boards outperformed others by 17 percent over the same period, proving the existing gender imbalances are costing firms money.

Overcoming the Age Issue in Your Job Search

Overcoming the Age Issue in Your Job Search Overcoming the Age Issue in Your Job Search In the news recently: JK Scheinberg, an engineer who spent 21 years at Apple and is known for persuading Steve Jobs to move the Mac to Intel processors in 2005, was rejected for a job at an Apple Store’s Genius Bar. With age discrimination still prevalent today, here are 5 articles Baby Boomers need to read.A job search in your 50s or 60s might not sound ideal, but the reality is that many people will find themselves in this situation as the retirement age continues to rise. Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey found that the retirement age is currently 61 â€" up four years since 1991 â€" and more than half of today’s workers aged 58-64 expect to retire after the age of 65.Job searching is rarely an easy or exciting event, and its difficulty is exacerbated with age. While age discrimination in the work place is technically illegal, the practice is by no means extinct. Job seekers need to be aware that job-search advice is not “one size fits all,” and older individua ls need to tailor their resumes, interviews and general attitudes accordingly to avoid being passed over for younger candidates. With that in mind, Ladders has compiled the following articles to help baby boomers perform an age-appropriate job search: Job Search in Your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s As you age, you will want to change the types of jobs you seek, the personal brand you introduce, even the way you present your resume. 5 Magic Words for Older Candidates If you’re over the age of 40, use these five words on your resume and during interviews. Acing a Job Interview After Age 50 You’re certainly qualified, but resting on your laurels won’t cut it in an interview. Follow these guidelines to land that job at any age. Is It Your Age or Your Attitude? You can’t turn back the clock, but you can show hiring managers your passion and record of results. Job Seekers of a Certain Age Job seekers in their 50s may be stereotyped as counting the days to retirement or running up hea lth-insurance costs. Older professionals describe how they’ve fought those perceptions on the job search.

Desktop Support Analyst Salary and Job

Desktop Support Analyst Salary and Job Desktop Support Analyst Salary and Job How would you like to be the one person the entire staff relies on to ensure computer problems don’t derail their productivity? The superhero who coworkers call on in their most desperate hour? It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s the desktop support analyst! The desktop support analyst swoops in to provide employees the help they need with all their computing devices - from laptops to tablets to smartphones. The term “desktop” is simply a holdover from another era. Here’s a look at the typical workday for a desktop support analyst. Remote help Many people associate in-person assistance with desktop support analysts. Today, however, these IT pros are more likely to provide remote help. Technologies such as screen sharing, remote control applications and live chat have made it much easier for desktop support analysts to provide high-quality support without leaving their desks. Most cases can be resolved through online chat, email or phone calls, or through messages sent via a ticketing system. As the number of devices without serviceable parts, such as tablets and mini notebooks, grows in the workplace, the desktop support analyst will spend less time on hardware repairs System repairs A desktop support analyst may spend a portion of his or her typical workday repairing malfunctioning systems. Repairs may be as simple as wiping a system clean and installing a fresh operating system. More challenging problems may require diagnosing and correcting hardware, networking or software issues. As the number of devices without serviceable parts, such as tablets and mini notebooks, grows in the workplace, the desktop support analyst will spend less time on hardware repairs. Even for devices that can be repaired, it may be easier and less expensive to wipe a machine back to a preconfigured system image, or send the device out for service instead of trying to fix it in-house. Configurations The desktop support analyst also provisions new computers, tablets and other company-issued IT resources. Based on a user’s job requirements, the desktop support analyst will select the appropriate hardware and software configurations and install them. And during a companywide system upgrade or refresh, these technology professionals are often called on to perform the majority of the work. According to the 2019 Robert Half Technology Salary Guide, the salary midpoint for a desktop support analyst is $61,250. The above is just a quick overview of the complex - and vital role - a desktop support analyst superhero plays in helping to support users and the business. How to be productive when your life is in chaos

How to be productive when your life is in chaos How to be productive when your life is in chaos In a perfect world, everything is steady. You can make plans that actually come true 100% of the time. You can anticipate things in advance. But as you and I both know, that’s not how life works. In real life, a single random (and unexpected) event can suddenly screw up all your plans, goals, and good intentions to make a change. Think of … A family member who passes away. Getting pregnant. Getting into a car accident. A calamity at work that causes bankruptcy. Falling in love. Unplanned events can disrupt everything. I’ve experienced that several times in my life. And there’s nothing you can do to prevent unexpected events. To be clear, when I talk about chaos, I’m not talking about adverse events. Sometimes, good things can also disrupt our focus. Life can be unpredictable. And despite that unpredictability, we still have to function. We must wake up, treat the people in our lives with respect, do our work, and find inner calm. The way I see it, we have two choices. We accept that life is chaos and find a way to adapt ourselves. We refuse to adapt and become miserable because “life is hard.” To me, it’s a no-brainer. I choose the former. But how do you adapt when life is uncertain? How do you still manage to be productive when you can’t even catch your breath before you have to deal with the next thing? Here are 3 tips that can help you with those challenges.1. Stay focused on your tasksWhen something important interrupts your life, it’s easy to develop tunnel vision. Before you know it, your whole life can be consumed by something random. Let’s say you fall in love with someone. And all of a sudden you can’t think of anything else but that person. You can’t focus on your work. You forget about your friends. You don’t go to the gym anymore. You just want to spend time with that person.Even though it’s great to be in love, there’s more to life.Sure, enjoying today matters. But we can’t allow ourselves to forget where we are going in life. We can’t neglect our work, family, friends, and health- under any circumstances. To stay focused and not give up my ideals, I keep reminding myself of why I do what I do. I do that through daily journaling. No matter how hectic your life is, you can always find 10 minutes to sit down and reflect. No excuses.Plus, I keep looking at my goals almost every day. That reminds me of where I want to go. And when you know where you want to go, you’ll keep going. It’s as simple as that.Want to hear more tips about staying focused during chaotic times?  Listen to my latest podcast episode about it.2. Work in short burstsAlways be prepared to get work done. Every time you have a moment to yourself, don’t play with your phone, but instead, squeeze in some work. Even if it’s only 8 minutes.I bring my laptop and notebook with me wherever I go. Those two things are always by my side. When my life lacks structure, I whip out the laptop at any free moment I have.Doesn’t matter what time it is, where I am, or how long I can work- when I get the chance,  I work. But working in short bursts is not that easy. After all, you can’t truly focus. In a perfect world, you have hours of time blocked for a single important task.  That’s how you do deep work.Working in short bursts  only  works if you know what you have to do (Step 1).That’s why I always keep a long list of things that I have to do. So when I work in short bursts, I know that I can’t waste my time browsing the internet or thinking, “What should I do next?”The process is simple. I grab my laptop, look at my list, and pick one thing that I feel like doing at that time. My list consists of essential tasks. So it doesn’t matter which task gets done first. For example, this is about the ninth time (I lost count) I’m working on this article. My life has no structure right now. But that’s okay. I still write my articles.Remember: Your goal is not to work like this forever. When you’ve weathered the storm,  get back to your regular routines.3. Fuel yourselfLife can be demanding. You need proper fuel to handle the phys ical and mental stress that you endure.I’m no diet expert. But I am an expert on  my  personal diet. Usually, I’m not a fan of trial and error. But when it comes to dieting, it’s my go-to strategy.I’ve tried many different diets and eating patterns. I currently eat mostly protein and unsaturated fat as my first meal, which is around 11:30am. In other words, I skip breakfast. That’s what they call intermittent fasting these days. There’s nothing new about that. People have been skipping breakfast for ages.Look, I can’t give you diet recommendations because it’s different for every person. But I can share a few things you should consider: Don’t believe everything you read from the health industry. Everybody has something to sell (I’m not only talking about products but also ideas). Distinguish the difference between eating patterns (when you eat, how often, etc.) and diets (the type of foods you consume like protein, fat, carbs). Be careful with experimentation. Only try things that are NOT harmful to your body (don’t starve yourself, don’t try weird diets like eating red meat only). Keep notes on how you feel after what food you eat. Exclude things from your diet that make you feel bad. That’s how I’ve found the ideal foods and eating pattern for me. For example, I eat rice every evening. I love it. Without eating rice, I get hungry very quickly and don’t feel as sharp. Should I stop eating rice because some random internet person says so? No, of course not.Finding structure in chaosIn the past, I hated uncertainty. I think that’s something you learn as you grow up. “Get a safe job!”, is what people say.But they don’t tell you that a safe job will ultimately make you lazy and weak. Why? Because you’re  safe.Jordan Peterson said it best in  12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos:“Order is not enough. You can’t just be stable, and secure, and unchanging, because there are still vital and important new things to be learned.”On the other hand, uncertainty forces action. That’s why I’ve grown to love uncertainty. It forces me to find solutions to every challenge I face. And once you live your life that way, you can’t even function properly with out challenges. When you’ve reached that stage, know that you’re  actually  safe. This  article  first appeared on  Darius Foroux.

Learn the Difference Between B2B Sales and B2C Sales

Learn the Difference Between B2B Sales and B2C Sales Learn the Difference Between B2B Sales and B2C Sales B2B is shorthand for “business to business.” It refers to sales you make to other businesses rather than to individual consumers. Sales to consumers are referred to as “business-to-consumer” sales or B2C. Some Examples of B2B Sales B2B sales often take the form of one company selling supplies or components to another. For example, a tire manufacturer might sell merchandise to a car manufacturer. Another example would be wholesalers that sell their products to retailers who then turn around and sell them to consumers. Supermarkets are a classic example of this activity. They buy food from wholesalers  then sell it at a slightly higher price to individual consumers. Business-to-business sales can also include services. Attorneys who take cases for business clients, accounting firms that help companies do their taxes, and technical consultants who set up networks and email accounts are all examples of B2B service providers. B2B vs. B2C Sales   Selling B2B is different from selling B2C in a number of ways. The greatest difference is that youll typically be dealing with either professional buyers or high-level executives when you attempt to make B2B sales. Buyers make their livings getting the best deals possible out of salespeople and theyre good at it. Executives might include the CEOs of major corporations. In either case, B2B sales often call for a somewhat higher level of professionalism than B2C sales. Youll have to dress and behave more formally to succeed. B2B sales also require that you know how to effectively deal with gatekeepers such as receptionists and assistants. You have to get past them to get to your target- the individual who has the ultimate authority to commit to the sale.   When Youre Dealing With Buyers Keep in mind that most professional buyers have received extensive training in how to work with- and see through- salespeople. Selling tactics that might work well with uninitiated consumers often fail with buyers. Theyll see you coming a mile away. Buyers also know exactly how to manipulate salespeople, often employing tricks like stalling to try to wrangle a better price from you on the product. When Youre Dealing With Executives Dealing with executives is a whole different  ball game. C-suite decision makers can be very intimidating. Theyre often extremely busy people  who dont appreciate others wasting their time. You should be well versed in all aspects of your product so that you can promptly and easily answer any questions posed to you. You cant say, Let me get back to you on that, because the executive might not take your call or open the door to you a second time. You could lose the sale just like that.   Do your research on the prospect ahead of time. Understand what he does for the company and how he does it. Get a firm grasp on the companys products or services as well. Youll want to be completely prepared to wow executives with your knowledge of their operations during your sales presentations.   Some Other Differences- Which Is Right for You? Your goals will be strategically different. Of course, you want to sell in both areas, but your primary concern with B2B sales is repeat business. You want to build relationships with the companies and their buyers and executives so that these businesses welcome you back again and again to meet their ongoing needs. This isnt the case with consumers. They tend to be easily influenced by the latest effective advertising tactic that rings their chimes. Theyre fickle and often tend to buy on a whim. You might make one sale and then that consumer is off into the sunset, never to be heard from again, particularly if youre not selling big-ticket items like automobiles. Your potential market will likewise be much narrower with B2B sales. Compare the number of businesses out there that might need your product to the number of consumers eager to purchase the next hot, must-have item- or even a not-so-hot product thats a necessity. Youll spend more time cultivating your business clients, but this factor might not be so pronounced if your B2C sales push a high-ticket product rather than a $5 gizmo. All this feeds into the sales cycle: It tends to be longer and multistaged with B2B commerce. Price points for B2B sales tend to be steeper, more complex, and multifaceted. Thats not so much the case with consumer sales. In the end, it comes down to what and how you like to sell- and how good you are at it. B2B sales can be more challenging overall, yet have the potential to be more lucrative, too.
